Darkrai-EX and Dark Patch—two cards, one perfect synergy that evolved into one of the most feared deck combinations in the Black & White format. The Pokémon Black & White Dark Explorers Booster Box, released in May 2012, plunges the TCG into darkness and gives Darkness-type Pokémon the means to completely dominate the game. Darkrai-EX’s Dark Cloak Ability removes the Retreat Cost from any Pokémon with Darkness Energy, while its Night Spear attack deals 90 damage to the Active Pokémon and 30 damage to a Benched Pokémon at the same time. Combined with Dark Patch, which attaches Darkness Energy directly from the discard pile to Benched Pokémon, this created a level of speed and flexibility that dominated the competitive landscape for months.

The fifth expansion in the Black & White series features more than 100 cards and includes six Pokémon-EX—Darkrai-EX, Tornadus-EX, Raikou-EX, Kyogre-EX, Groudon-EX, and Entei-EX—each available in both regular and Full Art versions. An impressive lineup of Darkness-type Pokémon surrounds Darkrai, including Zoroark, Umbreon, Sableye, and Absol, making this set one of the most thematically cohesive expansions in the BW series. The return of Pokémon Catcher as a Trainer card further accelerated the offensive pace of play. Each booster box contains 36 packs of 10 cards.
