Land versus air, air versus sea, sea versus land—the legendary battle between Groudon, Rayquaza, and Kyogre takes center stage in the Pokémon EX Emerald Booster Box. This ninth expansion in the EX series was released in May 2005 and holds a unique position: it is the only English EX set that does not have a direct Japanese counterpart, but is instead compiled from various Japanese sources, including the Gift Box Emerald and Quick Construction Packs. This gives the set a distinct character that you won’t find anywhere else in the EX line.
With 107 cards, EX Emerald features eleven Pokémon-EX, including Deoxys EX, Milotic EX, and the entire Regi trio as EX variants. A notable first was the introduction of holographic Basic Energy cards, which replaced the usual reverse holo in about every third pack—a surprise upon opening that remained unique to this set. The four pack designs feature Deoxys in Speed Forme, Groudon, Rayquaza, and Kyogre, and the Secret Rare is an unexpected guest: Farfetch’d as the box topper. Although the set does not contain any Gold Star cards, it is precisely this rarity as a sealed product that makes it valuable. The print run was similarly low to that of EX Deoxys, and sealed booster boxes are now extremely hard to find on the collector’s market.
