Back to where it all began. The Pokémon EX FireRed & LeafGreen Booster Box, released in August 2004, brought the original generation of Pokémon back to the TCG at a time when the card set had been entirely focused on third-generation Pokémon for several years. Nintendo deliberately chose to return to Kanto and the iconic 150 to make the most of the nostalgia factor—and that was immediately reflected in the pack artwork, featuring none other than Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, and Pikachu on the packaging.
The set includes 116 cards, including four Secret Rares and the very first Charizard EX ever produced for the Pokémon TCG. That card is, without a doubt, the standout piece and continues to drive interest in this set to this day. Booster packs featuring Charizard on the packaging typically fetch 10 to 25 percent more than those with other artwork—clear evidence of this Pokémon’s enduring popularity. Each booster box contains 36 packs, each with 9 cards. Although the print run for FireRed & LeafGreen was slightly higher than that of earlier EX sets, sealed boxes have since become scarce. For collectors looking to bridge the gap between the original Base Set era and the EX series, this box is a particularly significant item.
