The Pokémon EX Ruby & Sapphire Booster Box marked the beginning of a whole new chapter for the Pokémon Trading Card Game in June 2003. This was the very first expansion distributed not by Wizards of the Coast, but by Pokémon USA—and thus the set that officially ushered in the EX era. In addition to a completely revamped card design, Ruby & Sapphire introduced Pokémon-EX, more powerful cards with holographic borders that awarded two Prize Cards instead of one when knocked out.
The set is entirely focused on third-generation Pokémon and features more than 40 new species appearing on cards for the first time. Each booster box contains 36 packs of 9 cards each, with a chance to find eight different Pokémon-EX, including Blaziken EX, Gardevoir EX, and Sneasel EX. Although the set was released at a major turning point in the history of the TCG, its print run remained relatively limited because Pokémon’s popularity had declined during that period. As a result, sealed booster boxes are now hard to find and are increasingly valued by collectors as a key historical product from the early EX series.
