The Year of the Dragon brought a Dragon type—in 2012, the Chinese Year of the Dragon, the Pokémon Black & White Dragons Exalted Booster Box introduced the Dragon type as a brand-new Energy type in the Pokémon TCG. It was the first time in more than a decade that a completely new type had been added to the card game, and it fundamentally changed the way decks were built. Dragon-type Pokémon require Energy of multiple types for their attacks, making them powerful but strategically demanding.
The sixth expansion in the Black & White series was released on August 15, 2012, and features 128 cards with more than fifteen Dragon-type Pokémon, including Rayquaza-EX, Giratina-EX, Garchomp, and Hydreigon. In total, the set contains a dozen Pokémon-EX, six of which are available as Full Art variants. Rayquaza-EX Full Art is the most coveted pull, while the Secret Rare Rayquaza (#128/124) is also high on collectors’ wish lists. Ho-Oh-EX and Mew-EX round out the lineup with beloved names from outside the Unova region. New Special Energy cards support the Dragon-type strategy and give the set a cohesive feel. Each booster box contains 36 packs of 10 cards. As the set that added an entirely new type to the Pokémon TCG—and did so in a perfect calendar year—a sealed Dragons Exalted box is a special collectible, both historically and thematically.
