A gold star next to a Pokémon’s name—that was a completely new phenomenon in November 2004. The Pokémon EX Team Rocket Returns Booster Box introduced the very first Gold Star Pokémon in the history of the TCG: Mudkip, Torchic, and Treecko, each featuring unique extended artwork by illustrator Masakazu Fukuda. With an estimated pull rate of just 1 in 72 packs, the chance of getting a Gold Star per booster box was extremely low, making these cards among the most sought-after pulls from the entire EX era.
In addition, the seventh EX expansion brought back the Dark Pokémon, a card type that hadn’t taken center stage since Neo Destiny in 2002. The Dark Pokémon in this set are more powerful than ever before and feature dual types, while the newly introduced Rocket’s Pokémon-ex stand out for their aggressive card design featuring spikes around the artwork. The set contains 111 cards and includes 36 packs per booster box, with Gyarados, Mewtwo, Scyther, and Tyranitar featured on the four different pack designs. The accompanying theme decks are named Jessie and James—a nod that every Pokémon fan will instantly recognize. Because Pokémon’s popularity had hit a low point at the time of release, the print run remained very limited. As a result, sealed booster boxes are exceptionally rare and rank among the most expensive boxes in the entire EX series.
